Best VPN for Android in 2026: Seven Apps Compared

There is no single best VPN for every Android phone. The right one depends on whether you need it free, how much you trust the company behind it and what you want it for: public Wi-Fi, travel, streaming or privacy from your mobile carrier. This guide compares seven VPN apps on Google Play using what each provider publishes and what its Google Play listing shows, checked in October 2026. It is written by the team that makes VPN Wave, one of the seven, and we receive nothing from the others. Plans, prices and free allowances change often, so confirm them on Google Play before you pay.

How We Compared These VPNs

We looked at what matters on an Android phone and can be checked: whether there is a real free plan and what it limits, where the company is based, whether it has published an independent audit of its privacy claims, what its Google Play listing discloses, and how simple the app is to use. We read each provider's own documentation and privacy policy and its Google Play listing in October 2026. We did not run lab speed tests, so this guide does not rank apps by speed: VPN speed depends mostly on how far you are from the server and how busy it is. The order below follows use cases rather than a score. VPN Wave comes first because we make it, so judge it by the same criteria as the rest.

VPN Wave: One-Tap VPN From the Makers of the iPhone App

VPN Wave is published by Wergames OÜ, an Estonian company whose iPhone VPN app has been on the App Store since 2020. The Android app arrived on Google Play in October 2026 and needs Android 11 or later. You pick a country or city, or let the app choose an optimal location, and connect with one tap. Smart Modes are ready-made presets for streaming, gaming, YouTube and other uses, and optional DNS protection checks domain names on the phone to block selected trackers and threats. Connections run over the VLESS and Shadowsocks protocols rather than WireGuard or OpenVPN. The app is free to download and contains no ads, but connecting on Android requires a Premium subscription billed by Google Play, with plans and prices shown before you buy. Because it is new on Google Play, it has few reviews so far and does not yet show a Google Play security badge.

Proton VPN: The Strongest Free Plan

Proton VPN comes from Proton AG, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail. Its free plan on Android has no data cap and no ads, which is rare among free VPNs. The trade-offs are that the app picks a free server for you from a limited set of countries, free users get lower priority than paying users, and streaming is not supported on the free plan. Proton has published independent audits of its no-logs policy, and its apps are open source. If you need a free VPN on Android and do not need a particular country, start here. Paid plans unlock the full network and streaming.

NordVPN: Big Network and Extra Tools

NordVPN has no free plan. What you pay for is one of the largest server networks, its WireGuard-based NordLynx protocol, a Threat Protection feature that blocks known malicious sites, and specialty servers such as double VPN. Its no-logs policy has been assessed by an independent auditor several times, and NordVPN was among the first apps to show Google Play's Independent security review badge when Google introduced it in 2023. It suits people who want a full-featured paid service and do not mind an app with more settings.

Surfshark: One Plan for Every Device

Surfshark has no free plan, but one subscription covers an unlimited number of devices, which makes it a natural choice for a household with several Android phones, tablets and a TV. The company is based in the Netherlands and has had its no-logs policy independently assessed. The Android app includes CleanWeb, which blocks ads and trackers, and a split-tunnelling feature called Bypasser, so chosen apps or sites can skip the VPN.

Mullvad: Sign Up Without an Email

Mullvad VPN, from Sweden, takes the most private approach to accounts: you get a random account number and never give an email address, and you can even pay in cash by post. There is no free plan and no long-term discount, just one flat monthly price. The Android app is open source, uses WireGuard and has been independently audited. Choose it if limiting what any company knows about you matters more than streaming or extra features.

Windscribe: Generous Free Data

Windscribe, based in Canada, gives free users a monthly data allowance of 10 GB once they confirm an email address, less without one, plus a choice of several free locations. That is more flexibility than most free plans offer. Paid plans unlock every location and unlimited data, and a build-your-own option lets you pay only for the locations you need. It works well as a free backup VPN for travel and public Wi-Fi.

TunnelBear: The Friendliest First VPN

TunnelBear, owned by McAfee and based in Canada, is the easiest app here for someone who has never used a VPN: plain language, few settings and a cheerful design. The free plan is real but comes with a small monthly data allowance, enough to try it or cover occasional public Wi-Fi, not to keep the VPN on all day. TunnelBear has a long record of publishing independent security audits. Paid plans remove the data limit.

Free or Paid: Which Do You Need on Android?

A free plan from an established company with published audits and a paid tier, such as Proton VPN, Windscribe or TunnelBear, is fine for light use: public Wi-Fi at a café or a quick look at a site from another country. Free plans limit data or locations, slow down at busy times and rarely work with streaming services. Be careful with free VPN apps from developers you have never heard of. VPN servers cost money to run, and an app that charges nothing and has no paid plan has to earn it some other way, usually through ads or your data. If you want the VPN on all the time, need a specific country or want to stream, a paid plan is the better deal.

Five Checks Before You Install Any Android VPN

Whichever app you choose, the Google Play listing tells you most of what you need. First, confirm the developer name and that it matches the provider's website. Second, read the Data safety section to see what the app collects and whether it shares data with other companies. Third, look for the Independent security review badge, which shows the app passed a security assessment by an authorized lab. Fourth, make sure the app does not ask for permissions a VPN does not need, such as contacts, SMS or call logs. Fifth, after installing, check that your IP address really changes and that nothing leaks, using an IP checker and a VPN leak test.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free VPN for Android?

Proton VPN has the strongest free plan on Android: no data cap and no ads, from a Swiss company that has published independent no-logs audits. The app picks a free server for you from a limited set of countries, and streaming is not included. Windscribe is a good alternative if you want to choose among several free locations and can live with a monthly data allowance.

Is VPN Wave free on Android?

VPN Wave is free to download from Google Play, but connecting on Android requires a Premium subscription. Plans and prices are shown in the app before you buy, and Google Play handles the payment. The App Store version for iPhone, iPad and Mac has a free tier.

Do I need a VPN on my Android phone?

Not all the time. A VPN is worth turning on when you use public or hotel Wi-Fi, when you travel and want services from home, or when you do not want your mobile carrier or the network owner to see which sites you visit. It does not stop malware or phishing, and it does not make you anonymous to sites you are logged in to.

Which VPN apps have the Google Play security badge?

Open the app's Google Play listing and look in the Data safety section for "Independent security review". The App Defense Alliance also publishes a directory of apps that completed the assessment. The badge shows the app passed a security review; it does not guarantee the app has no flaws, and new apps may not have completed one yet.

Are free VPN apps safe on Android?

Some are. Free plans from established providers that also sell paid plans and publish audits, such as Proton VPN, Windscribe and TunnelBear, are safe for light use. Free apps from unknown developers that show ads, ask for unrelated permissions or do not explain how they pay for their servers are the risky ones.

Can I use the same VPN on Android and iPhone?

All seven apps in this guide have both Android and iPhone versions. Whether one subscription covers both depends on the provider and on where you bought it, because a subscription bought through Google Play or the App Store is managed in that store.

Will a VPN slow down my Android phone?

Your traffic takes a detour through the VPN server, so speed depends mostly on how far away the server is and how busy it is. A nearby location usually feels close to your normal speed. Free plans are often slower at busy times because free users get lower priority.
