VPN for Android: How to Set Up and Use One
Android has VPN support built into the system. One VPN app at a time can route your phone's traffic through an encrypted tunnel, and Android shows a key icon while it does. This guide shows how to install and connect VPN Wave on Android 11 or later, where the VPN settings are on Pixel, Samsung and Xiaomi phones, what Always-on VPN and "Block connections without VPN" do, and how to check that your IP address really changed.
Check your current IP
Open our IP checker before and after you change your IP to see the difference. It also tests your browser for WebRTC leaks.
What a VPN Does on Android
Android gives VPN apps a system interface called VpnService. When you connect, the app creates a virtual network interface and Android sends your apps' internet traffic through it, on Wi-Fi and on mobile data. The traffic travels encrypted to the VPN server, and websites see the server's IP address instead of yours. Your mobile carrier or the owner of a public Wi-Fi network can see that you are connected to a VPN, but not the pages you open inside the tunnel. A VPN does not sign you out of anything: Google, social networks and shops still know who you are when you are logged in. It also does not change your Google account or Google Play country, which follow your account and payment details rather than your IP address.
How to Install VPN Wave on Android
Open Google Play and search for VPN Wave, or tap the Google Play badge on this page. Before you install, check the listing: the developer is Wergames, and the web address of the official listing ends in id=app.vpnwave.unlimitedsecurityproxy. Other apps with similar names are separate products. VPN Wave needs Android 11 or later. The app is free to download, but VPN connections on Android require a Premium subscription. Available plans and prices are shown in the app before you buy, and Google Play handles the payment. You can manage or cancel the subscription in Google Play under Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel it.
How to Connect for the First Time
Open VPN Wave and choose a location, or keep the optimal location the app suggests, then tap connect. The first time, VPN Wave explains how it routes your traffic, and then Android shows its own connection request asking whether to let the app set up a VPN connection. Tap OK. Android shows this prompt for every VPN app, and it is how the system makes sure no app can route your traffic without your consent. When the tunnel is up, a key icon appears in the status bar and VPN Wave shows a notification while the VPN is running. To disconnect, open the app and tap disconnect. If you later connect with a different VPN app, Android turns VPN Wave off, because only one VPN can be active at a time.
Where to Find VPN Settings on Pixel, Samsung and Xiaomi
Android lists VPN apps and profiles in Settings. On Pixel and most phones with stock Android, open Settings > Network & internet > VPN. On Samsung Galaxy phones with One UI, open Settings > Connections > More connection settings > VPN. On Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO phones with HyperOS or MIUI, open Settings > Connection & sharing > VPN. Menu names change between versions, so if you cannot find the entry, type VPN into the search bar at the top of Settings. Tap the gear icon next to a VPN app to see its system options, including Always-on VPN.
Always-on VPN and Block Connections Without VPN
Android has two system settings for VPN apps, under the gear icon next to the app in VPN settings. Always-on VPN asks Android to start that app's VPN when the phone turns on and to keep it running. Block connections without VPN, also called lockdown mode, is Android's system-level kill switch: whenever the VPN is not connected, apps get no internet access at all, so nothing leaves the phone outside the tunnel. Whether Always-on works depends on the VPN app handling a start from the system, and not every app does. Test it before you rely on it: turn on Always-on VPN only, restart the phone and check that the key icon appears without opening the app. Turn on blocking only after that test passes. With blocking on and the VPN off, having no internet is the setting working as designed, not a fault.
Keep the VPN Connected: Battery Settings
Some Android phones close background apps aggressively to save battery, which can drop a VPN while the screen is off. If your connection stops after a few minutes in your pocket, open the app's battery settings (Settings > Apps > VPN Wave, then Battery or App battery usage) and choose Unrestricted. On Xiaomi phones the option is called No restrictions. Samsung phones also keep Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps lists under Battery > Background usage limits; make sure VPN Wave is not on them. Allow notifications for the app as well, so you can see at a glance whether the VPN is running. Encryption adds a little battery use, which is usually small next to the screen and the mobile radio.
How to Check That the VPN Works
Before you connect, open the VPN Wave IP checker in Chrome and note your IP address and country. Connect, reload the page and compare: the IP should now belong to the VPN server, and the country should match the location you picked. Then run the VPN leak test, which checks whether your browser still reveals your original address through WebRTC or through an IPv6 connection outside the tunnel. If the IP did not change, look for the key icon in the status bar, make sure no other VPN app is connected and try another location. If websites stop loading only while the VPN is on and you have set a custom provider under Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS, switch Private DNS to Automatic and test again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Android have a built-in VPN?
Android has the VPN system built in: the settings, the connection prompt and the Always-on options. To connect, you still need a VPN service, usually an app from Google Play. Some phones and carriers include their own VPN service, and work phones may come with a VPN profile from your employer.
Is VPN Wave free on Android?
VPN Wave is free to download from Google Play, but VPN connections on Android require Premium. Plans and prices are shown in the app before you buy, and Google Play bills the subscription. On iPhone, iPad and Mac, the App Store version also has a free tier.
Which Android version does VPN Wave need?
Android 11 or later. If Google Play says the app is not compatible with your device, check your Android version in Settings > About phone.
What does the key icon in the status bar mean?
Android shows a key icon whenever a VPN is active. If you see it, your traffic is going through a VPN. If you did not connect one, open Settings and search for VPN to see which app is running it.
Can I use two VPN apps at the same time on Android?
No. Android allows one active VPN at a time. Connecting with a second VPN app disconnects the first one.
Does a VPN change my Google Play country?
No. Your Google Play country follows your Google account and payment profile, not your IP address. A VPN changes the location that websites and apps see for your connection, but store availability and prices stay tied to your account.
Should I turn on Block connections without VPN?
Only after Always-on VPN has started your VPN by itself after a restart. Blocking cuts all internet access whenever the VPN is off, so it protects you from leaks but leaves you offline if the VPN app does not start.
Does a VPN slow down an Android phone?
Your connection takes a detour through the VPN server, so speed and latency depend on how far away that server is and how busy it is. A nearby location usually feels close to your normal speed. The phone does a little extra work for encryption, which current Android phones handle easily.
