Prepare BBC iPlayer on iPhone or iPad before a trip

For overseas viewing, BBC’s supported route is to save available episodes while you are still in the UK. Prepare them on the device you will bring. If you are already abroad, installing the app alone will not provide new streams or downloads.

Open the official BBC iPlayer App Store listing

Check your iPhone or iPad before you leave
Use the official App Store listing to check the current iOS or iPadOS requirement, then install or update BBC iPlayer. Sign in to your BBC account and check your TV Licence coverage. Complete setup while you still have a working UK connection.
Download the episodes inside the iPlayer app
Open the programme and tap Download beneath an available episode. Safari’s iPlayer website cannot download programmes on iPhone or iPad. Wait for the download to finish; adding an episode to a watchlist does not save its video.
Check the Downloads menu and expiry dates
Find each saved episode in Downloads and read its expiry date. The download expires when that programme’s online availability ends. Save it on the device you will use; downloads do not transfer between your iPhone and iPad.
Open the app again after any update
BBC advises opening iPlayer before leaving the UK if the app updated after you downloaded programmes. As a practical check, open Downloads and try a saved episode offline before travelling. This lets you catch a failed download while you can still fix it.
Play the saved episode while travelling
Open Downloads on the same device and select the saved programme. An expired or missing episode cannot be replaced with a new download while you are outside the UK. Check the expiry before relying on it for a long trip.

Find the next step for your iPlayer problem

“Outside the UK” appears while you are in the UK: Disable a VPN or proxy, then refresh the browser or reselect the programme in the app. Compare the same programme on Wi-Fi and mobile data. BBC says a newly assigned ISP address or a business network’s routing can also cause a wrong location result.
An IP checker says UK, but iPlayer still rejects the connection: IP-location databases can disagree. Our IP checker reports an estimate, not BBC’s decision. If the error also appears on your normal UK connection, contact your provider; give BBC support the provider name and checks you have already tried.
There is no Download button in Safari: Open the programme in the BBC iPlayer app on your phone or tablet. BBC does not provide mobile downloads through its website. Check a different episode if the first one has no download option.
You cannot install the app on an older device: Check Compatibility on the official iPlayer App Store listing and compare it with the iOS or iPadOS version installed on your device. A VPN cannot update your operating system. Use a supported device for offline downloads.
A saved programme disappeared or will not play abroad: Check the programme’s expiry and whether you are using the original download device. If the app updated after downloading and was not reopened before leaving the UK, BBC says playback abroad may fail. Prepare and test downloads before the next trip.
You bought BBC.com, but cannot find an iPlayer series: BBC.com subscriptions do not include iPlayer. Search the programme’s official page for a broadcaster or streaming service available in your country. Check that service’s catalogue before paying.

How can I watch BBC iPlayer abroad on an iPad?

While in the UK, download available episodes in the BBC iPlayer app on that iPad. Open Downloads to watch them abroad before their expiry dates. Episodes saved on an iPhone do not transfer to the iPad.

Can I download the BBC iPlayer app outside the UK?

Check the official App Store listing for availability in your store and the current device requirements. Installing an app and downloading a programme are different actions: iPlayer programme downloads must be prepared while you are in the UK.

Can I watch BBC iPlayer in Europe?

For a trip outside the UK, prepare available episodes in the app before departure. Being elsewhere in Europe does not add access to new iPlayer streams or downloads.

Why does BBC iPlayer say I am outside the UK when I am not?

A VPN, proxy, business network or incorrectly located ISP address may cause the error. BBC recommends disabling a VPN or proxy, then refreshing the page or selecting the programme again. If it persists on your normal UK connection, check with your internet provider.

Will a free VPN make BBC iPlayer work outside the UK?

A free or paid VPN does not establish access to a programme. BBC says it may block connections detected as VPNs or proxies. We have not published a verified BBC iPlayer playback test for VPN Wave.

Does downloading an episode give me another 30 days?

No. BBC says a download expires at the same time as its online version. Read the date shown for that episode rather than counting from the day you saved it.

Do I need a TV Licence to watch BBC iPlayer?

TV Licensing requires coverage for watching or downloading BBC programmes on iPlayer, including on iPhone and iPad. S4C programmes on demand are an exception. The official source is linked in this guide.
